Narrator:

Always looking for a new challenge, Dieter Moor was a lucky strike for the production. Dieter originally worked in theatre and most of his acting career has been on stage. In the early 1980's however he moved into catering, running a restaurant in Sri Lanka for three years, before becoming a presenter and personality on radio and television. He’s best known in Germany for the highly successful TV show “EX!”

Director:

Mark Cairns studied at art college, before deciding to pursue a career as a writer/director.

The film, supported with £5.000 from the British Film Institute, was shown in festivals around the world.
From 1997 to 2001 three more short films followed: 'Pass Over ', 'Lighthouse ' and 'Terminus' All Mark’s films are characterised by their multi layered scripts and visual style.
In 2000 the BBC discovered Mark, signing him to write and direct a film about love and the internet. 'Talk To Me' was well received when shown by the BBC.
At present Mark lives in Glasgow and is writing for BBC Scotland on a new weekly drama called 'River City'. In addition he has two features in development and has written a pilot for a television series.

Producer:

Carl Schmitt started as a production trainee at German television, before traveling to London in the early 90's to study Film & Television production at the prestigious Royal College of Art (RCA).
Carl met Mark Cairns in his first year at the RCA. They became a producer / director team and have worked together ever since. In 1993, his final year at the college Carl set up his own production company to produce his graduation film 'CALLiOPE' which starred the musician and actor, Phil Collins in the lead role.
After leaving the RCA he produced a 60 min. comedy /drama called 'The Token King' for WDR television Cologne and Channel 4 London. This introduced the now Oscar nominated, Samantha Morton to the screen.
In the same year 'The Token King', was produced, the book 'Life Goes On' was also published and since then it’s been one of Carl’s dreams to turn the book into a film. Although a fantastic story, Carl knew that in Germany there was little chance of making it into a feature film.
So he and Mark decided on a 'small solution' - a documentary containing elements of a feature film to hopefully give some flavour of how a feature could look. What Carl didn’t know then, was that it would take another 8 years until the cameras rolled.

Production Design :

Angelica Boehm studied English and German literature, before she decided to pursue an artistic career. From 1990 to 1997 she studied interior design, sculpture and history of art. After her diploma she studied production design at the filmschool in Potsdam-Babelsberg. She graduated successfully in 2001.
Throughout her degree, Angelica worked as a production designer on short films, pop promos and commercials, in addition, she worked on exhibitions and CD ROM projects.
'Life Goes On' was a special challenge for her and her team. As neither the time or the money was available to build full scale sets, Angelica had to find locations which could be transformed into whatever the script needed and she frequently had to improvise with whatever was to hand.

Director of Photography:

Stefan Grandinetti’s early training was as a hotel manager and barkeeper. Ten years ago he was working in hotels like the Interconti in Berlin or the popular restaurant 'Fledermaus' in New York, before deciding to join the film business.
As a guest student and through various trainee schemes he won a place on the cinematography course at the filmschool in Potsdam. While studying there he took the opportunity to gain valuable experience in the 2nd unit on such large scale productions as “Duel – Enemy At The Gates” and “Resident Evil”.
For 'Life Goes On' Stefan was using a new optical system which was specially designed for a mini DV camera and never used on a feature film before. More new ground was being broken as Stefan was shooting a large number of scenes destined for blue and green screen effects to be completed in post production. No-one knew whether the quality of the image would stand up to this. 'Life Goes On' has been Stefan’s biggest challenge so far but he enjoyed every minute of it.

Costume Design:

Sonja Hesse - as a child of the 80's, the decade of glamorous fashion and designs – had always wanted a career in fashion.
Sonja became a costume designer, almost by accident. She joined a practical course in costume design which involved working for the summer theatre in Leipzig, Germany. From that moment she knew that she wanted to work in theatre and film.
Due to the production dates changing, at very short notice we found ourselves without a costume designer. Fortunately Sonja stepped in at the last minute and in Summer of 2001 she joined the team. Once on the film, she created all our most beautiful and intricate costumes, designing everything from Berlin civilians to Ufa ball gowns as well as researching authentic military uniforms. In January 2002 she gained her diploma and is now a full time costume designer for film and theatre.

Make-up:

The make-up artist Ulrike Geist is the second of our crew to hail from Switzerland. After high School and art college Ulrike took the classical route to become a make-up artist, training to be a hairdresser before joining a make-up course. Later studying film and photographic make-up in Toronto, Canada before returning to Europe.
She now works in theatre as well as for film and television. Her stage work includes "Phantom of the Opera" in Hamburg and various productions at the famous 'Bregenzer theatre festival'.
During 'Life Goes On' we required her special knowledge of period hair-styles and her expertise with wigs in order to recreate 1940's styles, making our extras look as authentic as possible.
